In an interview with an Italian TV network, the pontiff said this week that the current language of the Our Father prayer “is not a good translation.”
In Italian, and similarly in English the prayer asks God to “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” But, says Francis, it’s not the Lord that tempts.
“It is not He that pushes me into temptation and then sees how I fall,” Francis said in Italian. “A father does not do this.”
Francis pointed out that just a few days ago, France’s Catholic church adopted new phrasing in its version of the Lord’s Prayer.
This is a stunning admission by the Pope that the Catholic Church’s interpretation of a Scripture could have been wrong for so long! Especially a passage that every Catholic knows through endless repetition. It makes me wonder if this is just another step of the Pope to build solidarity with the greater Christian world out of compromise with the Bible.Protestants have known for centuries the Lord’s prayer is more accurately translated “lead us away from temptation.” Of course we do not have to beg God to not tempt us. James is very clear on this point. “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone” (James 1:13).
Reading back history, it started with the introduction of idols in the church claiming they meant no harm. They were supposed to bring faithfuls closer to God. It then became the Sabbath, catholic church said Sunday is supposed to be in honor of the ressurection. So we can break one commandment, the Sabbath, and ‘console’ God with a day he never consencrated.
In between these, there have been lots of compromises including the pope saying the Bible and Koran are both divinely inspired, Islam and Christianity are like brothers and sisters and much more.
The Pope is going for his one world religion and he clearly does not mind destroying the word of God along the way.
