Aide: Buhari’ll consider his health before deciding on second term

President Muhammadu Buhari will consider his state of health before taking the decision on whether to seek re-election in 2019 or not, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated in an interview on Sunday.

Buhari had a serious health challenge in 2017 that made him to seek medical attention outside the country twice.

On his return to the country after his first medical trip, the President stated that he had never been that sick in his life.

While answering questions on Buhari’s health status and his seeking re-election in 2019, Adesina said the President would not do whatever he believed his health could not sustain.

Adesina said, “The President is not a frivolous person. If he thinks that his health cannot carry anything, he will not do it.

“Every day you see the President, you see a glow about him and you see freshness about him. I think he is even in a better state than when he came in 2015. It’s all to the glory of God.

“Once he assesses that his health can carry it, there’s nothing wrong if he steps into the fray. But he has the final decision.”

The presidential spokesman urged Nigerians to wait for the President to tell them his position on the second-term issue.

On a recent media report that Buhari has re-appointed the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the Director-General of his campaign organisation, Adesina said such an appointment could only be made after a candidate had emerged.

“I believe that things like the DG will come when you have become a candidate. If the President steps into the fray now, he is an aspirant just like any other aspirant. Having a DG comes when you become a candidate of the party,” he argued.

He claimed Buhari had done more than enough to seek re-election, saying “The things he has done are apparent: security, despite the challenges of the moment, you can’t rule out what he has done in security.

“Economy went into recession, stayed there just for one year, it has come out and the indices are good. Even the World Bank has projected 2.5 per cent growth for Nigeria this year.

“Three things he appointed for himself: one, to secure the country; two, to fight corruption; and three, to revive the economy. They are going well.”

He reiterated Buhari’s promise to deliver free and fair elections to the country, stressing that the President fulfilled the promise in all the elections conducted under his watch.

“You would have noticed that since this government came, there have been elections the APC didn’t have to win. You saw Anambra. You saw a senatorial election there. Some months ago, in November, you saw the governorship election. If APC had wanted to overrun Anambra, using federal might, it would have done that to win the election.

“Election had held in Bayelsa under this administration, the APC didn’t do it. Ondo, the APC won fair and square. Kogi, it won fair and square. Where the APC wins, it wins. Where it loses, it loses. That’s the attitude of the President. Your party doesn’t have to win by hook or crook.”

World’s first sex shop shuts down, declares bankruptcy

Germany’s pioneering sex shop chain, Beate Uhse, said Friday that it has filed for insolvency, as the empire started by a female World War II pilot fails to rise to the challenge posed by erotic e-commerce. In its hey day, the group sold lingerie, erotic films and sex products. Uhse began her foray into erotic business in 1946, when she put together a pamphlet called “Document X” describing how women could avoid pregnancy. In post-war Germany, her advice was in high demand and she sold thousands of copies of her brochures. The mail order business thrived and the former fighter pilot and member of the Luftwaffe opened in 1962 her first shop in the German town of Flensburg. Named Institute of Marital Hygiene, the store selling lingerie and contraceptives became the world’s first sex shop. Her activities often ran counter to the morality of post-war Germany and she was called before the courts in thousands of legal suits filed against her. Yet she remained frank and unashamed about...

The name ‘State of Osun’ is illegal, court declares

An Osun State High Court sitting in Ilesa has said the changing of ‘Osun State’ to ‘State of Osun’ by the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola is illegal. Justice Yinka Afolabi, while delivering the judgment on Thursday in a case instituted by Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Ilesa branch, Mr. Kanmi Ajibola, challenging the legality of the “State of Osun Land Use Charge Law,” held that the law and its makers were unknown to the 1999 Constitution. Aregbesola had changed the name of the state from ‘Osun State’ to ‘State of Osun’ in 2011; but the NBA chairman, who is a human rights activist, approached the court in 2016 and asked the court to declare as null and void all transactions done by the state with the name ‘State of Osun.’ Afolabi also declared that the makers of the law, who are currently serving as members of the State House of Assembly, were not sworn in as members of the ‘State of Osun House of Assembly,’ but as members of ‘Osun State House of Assembly,’ going by...

John McCain has brain cancer, his office says.

Veteran US Republican Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer and is reviewing treatment options, according to his office. "The senator's doctors say he is recovering from his surgery 'amazingly well' and his underlying health is excellent," it added.
