Are you over 100? Then you've got a better chance of living even longer!

It’s considered an inescapable fact of life: the older you get, the more likely death becomes. But a new research conucted in Germany disproves of that suggestinh that the chances of dying may level off – at least for those who make it to 105 years old. The study found that death rates, which rise exponentially in adulthood, begin to decelerate after 80 years old and appear to eventually plateau, or even decline slightly, after the age of 105. By that point, the chances of passing away in a given year are approximately 50-50. “It’s the equivalent of tossing a coin each year,” said Prof Jim Vaupel, a specialist in ageing at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany and one of the authors. The findings add fuel to an unusually hostile debate between two camps of scientists, who are locked in an escalating dispute about whether humans are approaching their upper limit in terms of lifespan. The latest paper, from Vaupel’s team who argue there is no evidence of a loom...

UN condemns Plateau killings, AI says FG encouraging murderers

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, AntĂłnio Guterres, on Thursday expressed concern over violent conflicts between farmers and herders in countries across West and Central Africa, particularly the Plateau attacks that claimed the lives of over 86 villagers on Saturday. But the Amnesty International has said by failing to hold murderers to account, the Federal Government is encouraging impunity that is fuelling rising insecurity across the country. The Director Amnesty International Nigeria, Osai Ojigho, stated this in a report released by the international agency on Thursday. AI stated that its independently verified estimated figures indicated that since January 2018 “at least 1,813 people had been murdered in 17 states, which is double the 894 people killed in 2017.” Ojigho stated, “The death tolls reflect killings as a result of farmers-herders conflict, communal clashes, Boko Haram attacks and banditry. “We are gravely concerned about the rising spate of killings across...

U.S. court has sentenced former Liberian warlord known as “Jungle Jabbah” to 30 years in prison for gaining U.S. asylum by lying and also ordering the cooking of the hearts of captives and those he killed. Mohammed Jabbateh, 51, who has lived in East Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, since the late 1990s, was found guilty in October on two counts of fraud in immigration documents and two counts of perjury. He lied about his role in the civil war in his homeland and atrocities he committed, prosecutors said on Friday. During the height of Liberia’s first civil war from 1992 to 1995, Jabbateh, while serving as commander of a warring group, either personally committed or ordered acts such as rapes, ritual cannibalism, mutilation, murder and the use of child soldiers, according to prosecutors. An attorney for Jabbateh, Greg Pagano of Philadelphia, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to testimony, in one instance, Jabbateh ordered that the heart of a captive be cooked ...

Zimbabweans finally laugh at ex-leader Mugabe in new comedy

Robert Mugabe, 94, was once the most feared man in Zimbabwe, but lately artists have been imitating and mocking the former ruler. A satirical play, "Operation Restore Regasi," based on the military takeover and impending impeachment that ended the 37-year rule of the dictator, packed out theaters in the capital city, Harare. "The response was overwhelming. I thought with the hard economic hardships Zimbabweans are facing it would not attract many people," said Charles Munganasa, the Comedy Director. "We were wrong. We had to run it last week and we are going to run it thrice during the Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA)." Carol Magenga plays Grace Mugabe, Khetani Banda as the former Zimbabwean president and Charles Munganasa as the former army commander General Costantino Chiwenga. HIFA is an annual, week-long event that brings international artists to Zimbabwe. Asked about why he called it "Regasi," Munganasa said: "It came fro...

His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. Hawking is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the US. Arsenal 5 Everton 1: Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan sparkle as Ramsey hits treble ( Highlights inclusive)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan dazzled on their Emirates Stadium debuts as Aaron Ramsey's hat-trick led Arsenal's unceremonious 5-1 thumping of Everton. By the time £56million recruit Aubameyang displayed his midas touch in front of goal, Arsene Wenger's side were already three goals to the good and cruising on account of Aaron Ramsey's first two strikes, which came either side of a Laurent Koscielny header. Mkhitaryan set up the Wales international's opener and also laid on Aubameyang, his old partner in crime at Borussia Dortmund, for a goal on his maiden Premier League appearance, although the offside flag should have ruled that one out. Arguably, a defensive showing as abject as the ramshackle interpretation offered by Everton in the first half deserved such ill fortune. On-loan Manchester City centre-back Eliaquim Mangala suffered a debut ordeal and deflected Ramsey's second past Jordan Pickford, while Sam Allardyce's pre-match as...

Iranian police arrest 29 for involvement in hijab protests

Police in the Iranian capital, Tehran, have arrested 29 people for their involvement in protests against the country's compulsory headscarf law. Masih Alinejad, the Iranian activist behind the "White Wednesday" social media campaign against mandatory hijabs, who is now based in the US, told CNN that the movement has not been influenced from abroad. The wave of anti-goverment demonstrations last month was sparked by concerns over rising living costs and a stagnant economy, but also provided an opening for Iranian women to push for equal rights. In the past, women who allowed their hijab to slip could be admonished by the religious police, but these forces have been less prominent under the regime of President Hassan Rouhani. Soheila Jaloodarzadeh, a female member of the Iranian Parliament, said on Wednesday during an event on women's rights that the protests were the conclusion of years of restrictions, the semiofficial Ilna news agency reported.

Scientists have unearthed a total of 10 skeletons including those of children as well as adults in a burial ground in Mexico in a peculiar circular/spiral arrangement. The skeletons were found in Tlalpan, a city located in southern frontier of Mexico. After a study of the skeletons, researchers have confirmed that two out of the ten skeletons belong to the female gender while one was a male. These skeletons have been estimated to be 2,400-year old. The rest of the skeletons are currently being studied. However, most of these skeletons belong to children out of which the scientists have been able to identify a skeleton of a baby who was around one-month-old while another child was between the ages of three to five. A researcher from the Pontifical University of Mexico, Jimena Rivera Escamilla stated that the alignment of the bodies suggested that they were placed one upon the other.Escamilla also stated that the individuals could represent the circle of life that starts from a baby g...

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc couldn’t resist a parting shot at Aubameyang: “Apart from the unpleasant episodes in the past few weeks we would like to remember that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at BVB was a real success story." The 28-year-old has been at Dortmund since 2013 and has scored 141 goals for the club.

He was punched in the face, his mouth taped and bound like a prisoner for eight hours on his trip to reunite with his family. His offence was that he got into a dispute with the flight attendants over his seat number. And then, as Mail Online reported, matters escalated. Ukesone said he hadn’t been on a plane in over 35 years. ‘He apparently sits in the wrong seat and was told to change seats by a flight attendant,’ attorney Howard Schaffner told ABC News. ‘He didn’t think he was in the wrong seat and there was an argument and, at some point, he was hit.’ Emirates Airlines, in a statement released Monday, confirmed the incident. ‘Emirates can confirm that a passenger on flight EK235 from Dubai to Chicago on 23 January had to be restrained by cabin crew due to unruly behavior during the flight.
