Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, was found dead on Thursday of an apparent suicide a week before the California alt-rock band was due to embark on a US tour.    Bennington, 41, known for his powerful, belting vocals, died at his Palos Verdes home near Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office said.    Spokesman Brian Elias said the death was being handled as an apparent suicide, and celebrity website TMZ, citing law enforcement sources, said Bennington had hung himself while alone at the house when his family was out of town.

A court in Tunisia has banned Wonder Woman, a US film starring a former soldier with the Israeli army, more than a month after it was scheduled to open at cinemas, a legal source said. The film was due to be screened at two venues in Tunis in early June, but the showings were "suspended" following a complaint from the nationalist al-Chaab party. The court finally decided to impose the ban last Friday, prosecution spokesman Sofiene Sliti said. The verdict was only disclosed to the media this week without a reason given for the judgement. Al-Chaab demanded the film be banned in Tunisia because Gadot had defended Israel's 2014 war on the Palestinian enclave of Gaza on Facebook.

Malaysia has banned state broadcasters from playing the hit single Despacito following complaints about the song's "steamy" lyrics, officials say. A senior minister said the single, featuring Canadian singer Justin Bieber on a remix, was considered un-Islamic. Malaysia has strict censorship laws and has banned sensitive material before. Despacito, by Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonsi, was earlier named the most-streamed song of all time, receiving 4.6bn plays worldwide in six months. "Despacito will not be aired by the government-owned broadcast stations because we received public complaints," Malaysia's communications minister Salleh Said Keruak told AFP news agency. "The lyrics are not suitable to be heard," he added. Meanwhile, privately-owned radio stations have been "encouraged" to "practice self-censorship," he said.

A strong earthquake in the Aegean Sea has killed at least two people on the Greek island of Kos, officials say. The 6.7-magnitude quake hit 12km (seven miles) north-east of Kos, near the Turkish coast, with a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey said. Several others were injured on Kos, mayor George Kyritsis said. A small tsunami was reported on the Turkish coast. Pictures on social media showed people walking with water lapping their ankles.

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of eight more Resident Electoral Commissioners.The confirmation is coming after the Senate resolved not to confirm any nominee from Acting President Yemi Osinbajo until all issues as regards confirmation of appointments are resolved. However, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki explained that the Senate would only limit confirmation to the agencies stated in the constitution of which the electoral body INEC, is included. Twelve nominees had been awaiting the confirmation of their appointments after the lawmakers earlier approved the appointment of 15 others out of the 27 nominees whose names were sent to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Nigeria total debt rose by N4.76tn in 2016, the Debt Management Office has disclosed. The DMO disclosed this in its 2016 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday. According to the office, Nigeria’s debt as of December 2016 stood at N17.36tn, up from N12.6tn a year earlier. This reflects an increase of N4.76tn or 37.74 per cent within a period of one year. The significant increase, according to the DMO, is mainly in the domestic debt component and is attributable to the additional issuance of debt securities to fund the 2016 budget deficit and the refinancing and redemption of matured securities. The DMO explained that the increase in borrowing could be looked at from the deficits contained in both the 2015 and 2016 budgets in relation to the Gross Domestic Product.

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, the club have announced. Reports suggest the Premier League champions will pay £70 million for the Spain international, who is yet to agree personal terms or undergo a medical. Veteran US Republican Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer and is reviewing treatment options, according to his office. The options may include chemotherapy and radiation, his doctors said. The 80-year-old politician is in "good spirits" recovering at home. The tumour was discovered during a surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye last week. A Vietnam veteran, Mr McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war. The six-term senator and 2008 Republican presidential candidate underwent surgery at a clinic in Phoenix, in the state of Arizona, last Friday. Tissue analysis revealed that a primary brain tumour known as glioblastoma was associated with the clot, a statement from the Mayo Clinic said. "The senator's doctors say he is recovering from his surgery 'amazingly well' and his underlying health is excellent," it added.

Tiemoue Bakayoko has completed his £40 million move to Chelsea from Monaco after completing his medical on Friday and signing a five-year deal. Chelsea and Antonio Conte targeted Bakayoko as their first choice option to strengthen their midfield and they are now expected to allow Nemanja Matic to leave to make room for the France international. Talks between Chelsea, Monaco and Bakayoko's representatives have moved slowly since they first started but all parties ultimatley came to an agreement for the 22-year-old. Bakayoko returned from his holiday in New York to complete the final arrangements of the transfer, though a knee injury could rule him out of the Blues's pre-season friendlies. The US will maintain good relations with Qatar, President Donald Trump has told an American news channel, adding that the US airbase won't be moved out of the Middle Eastern country despite the diplomatic and economic blockade imposed on Doha by the Saudi-led group. Qatar is home to the Al-Udeid airbase that holds the forward headquarters of Central Command and hosts around 10,000 American troops. Trump said, "We are going to have a good relationship with Qatar and not going to have a problem with the military base. If we ever had to leave, we'd have 10 countries willing to build us another one. And they'll pay for it. The days of us paying for things are largely over." A Kaduna State High Court, on Thursday, remanded a whistleblower, Abubakar Sani-Chindo, in prison for allegedly providing false information that led to the raid on former Vice-President Namadi Sambo’s residence in Kaduna by officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offence Commission on June 28. Sambo’s house was raided thrice by the anti-graft agency, but failed to find incriminating documents or stashed cash in the building. The ICPC, in two counts before Justice Aliyu Mohammed, accused Sani-Chindo of providing the false information that led to the reported raid. Counsel for the ICPC, Elijah Akaakohol, added that the whistle-blower sometime on June 21, 2017, gave the false information to the commission.

The Minister of Power Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, announced that Nigerian households would enjoy an improved power supply by August. The minister said this on Thursday in a speech delivered at an event called “Power Sector Reform In Nigeria: Challenges and the Way Forward,” held at the University of Lagos. “We are working round the clock to solve the [power supply] problem. We are going to get more power by August,” Mr. Fashola pledged. “How we get equipment, transformers, and all of the equipment needed within the next cycle of 60 to 90 days is critical so that we don’t lose all that energy that is coming from the raining season,” he added.

Telecoms operator, Etisalat Nigeria has officially changed the company’s corporate identity to 9mobile. This comes after the company’s largest shareholder, Emirates Telecommunications Corporation, directed Etisalat Nigeria to stop using its brand name within the next three weeks, after terminating management agreement with its Nigerian arm. Etisalat, which controls 13 per cent market share in Nigeria, has had a running battle with a consortium of 13 banks since March, after it notified them of its inability to service its 1.2 billion dollar debt in February due to the foreign exchange challenges in the country.

A workman trapped inside a cash machine was forced to pass handwritten notes through the receipt slot to summon help - but customers thought it was a joke. A free speech group on Tuesday sued US President Donald Trump for blocking Twitterusers from his @realDonaldTrump account, arguing the practice violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The lawsuit, brought by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University in New York and joined by seven individual Twitter users, claims Trump blocked a number of accounts whose owners replied to his tweets with comments that criticised, mocked or disagreed with the president. Trump's blocking of the accounts amounted to an unconstitutional effort to suppress dissent, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York. Because Trump frequently turns to Twitter to make policy statements, his account qualifies as a public forum from which the government cannot exclude people on the basis of their views, according to the lawsuit.

President Muhammadu Buhari is "recuperating fast" and will return home "very soon", says Nigeria's acting head of state Yemi Osinbajo. He made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday morning, after visiting Mr Buhari at the London hospital where he is being treated for an unspecified illness. Mr Osinbajo, now back in Nigeria, said he had discussed a wide range of issues during the hour-long meeting. Mr Buhari has been in London since May. The 74-year-old leader was elected to power in 2015, becoming the first Nigerian opposition leader to win an election. It is his second period of medical leave in the UK, the first began in January and he returned home in March. His long absence has led to speculation about whether he will be able to resume his presidential duties.

Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. trading as Etisalat Nigeria on Tuesday informed its customers that the change of brand name will not affect its operations. The Vice President, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, EMTS, Mr Ibrahim Dikko, in a statement said that EMTS was aware of recent news reports regarding Etisalat Group’s withdrawal of the right to the continued use of the Etisalat brand in Nigeria by EMTS. Seven friends have drowned after the boat they were in capsized while they were trying to take a selfie in the middle of a reservoir. One person is missing and two others are fighting for their lives in hospital, following the incident that took place shortly after the group finished recording a Facebook Live. The eight friends were on a boat with three locals at Vena reservoir near Nagpur in India when the tragedy struck. According to the police, the incident occurred when a number of men came to one side of the boat to take selfies and videos, causing it to tilt and take on water. “They were so busy clicking photos and making videos on their mobile phones that they failed to see that water was entering their boat,” Police Inspector Chandrashekhar Bahadure told The Hindu. “Some of them were under the influence of alcohol. Spanish striker Alvaro Morata is now the focus of frustrated Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s attentions after Romelu Lukaku slipped through his fingers and signed for Manchester United, according to media reports. Chelsea have tabled a £62 million (70m euros, $80m) bid for the 24-year-old Morata but Real Madrid are holding out for around £80m, the reports say.
